Press Release for “the Canned Think”

IT’S A REVOLUTION!

The printed word preserved forever in a skin of steel! That revolution is “the CANNED THINK.”

A new concept in publishing, it frees the printed page from the conventional three-dimensional cubiform structure. Not since the Gutenberg Bible has there been such a drastic change in the format of a book. The Can is a book of poetry three inches wide by thirty-two inches long, and it is now available in Canada.

The Can’s contents are on long coloured sheets. The sheets are fastened together at the top to facilitate display on any vertical surface in the fashion of Japanese prints. The internal format is from the ancient Sutras, the typography is based on modern printing techniques, and the extended use of the tin can is adapted from today’s packaging trends.

The Can is symptomatic of our mechanised materialistic world. Most comestibles come in one form of it or another making the purchasers can-oriented. Poetry in a can is therefore an attempt to reach the consumer with more than mere sustenance for the body.

“the CANNED THINK yours to open” is a tonic for the mind, providing a new stimulant in an old familiar package. Its purpose is to win back more readers to poetry.

“Poemtry” is the publisher’s term for the contents, thirty-three poems by Tyrrell Mendis, recently of London, England. His first collection of poems, “Broken Petals,” published there in conventional form, is also available in Canada.

The graphics, in the modern idiom, are by Jon Matthews.

“the CANNED THINK yours to open” is published by Joel Matthews at 396 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg 2, Manitoba.
