The Gothic Style of northern Europe was different in Italy, where a completely different style of Gothic was developed. In central Italy, especially in Florence and Siena, the buildings were usually of brick, the facades adorned with elaborate marble revetment.
The construction of Florence Cathedral began in 1296. It was completed in 1461. This long period of construction spanned the transition from Gothic to Renaissance. So, with the rectangle as the basic unit of design the cathedral’s ground plan is Gothic. The dome, meanwhile, designed by Brunelleschi, is Renaissance in style but with a Gothic feeling.
