Melaka is an interesting blend of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British influences and is considered to be Malaysia’s most historic city. As opposed to most other predominantly Islamic countries, religious tolerance is remarkable in Malaysia where the many Chinese temples are right beside the Hindu temples.
The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in the historic part of the city is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia. It was founded in 1646. It is remarkable for having been built with Chinese materials by workers from China.
