Little Britain United Church is the oldest United Church building in Manitoba. It was initially Presbyterian, served by Rev. John Black, the first Presbyterian minister at the Selkirk Settlement. The church was built by John Clouston and Duncan McRae, two of the most important stonemasons of the era. The tower was added in 1920, a memorial to the dead of World War I.
Little Britain United is a noteworthy vernacular interpretation of the tradition of English and Scottish parish churches whose architectural expression was from mediaeval Gothic traditions.
Only five of the stone churches from the Red River Settlement era now remain. The others are St. Andrews Anglican (1844-49), St. Peter¹s Anglican (1852-53), Kildonan Presbyterian (1852-54), and St. Clement¹s Anglican (1862-63).
