National Historic Site
The Parish of Holy Trinity was organized by Archdeacon John McLean in 1867. First services were in the Court House, six years before the incorporation of the town of Winnipeg.
The first church was built near the corner of Portage Avenue and Garry Street in 1868 on land loaned by the Hudson¹s Bay Company, and later purchased by the church.
The first Holy Trinity Church was the first church in Winnipeg.
Due to the growth of the town through booming immigration the church was extended in 1870, and then replaced in 1875. But this too became too small. So, in 1883, it was moved to its present location at Smith Street and Graham Avenue.
The winner in an international competition for its design was Charles H. Wheeler, newly arrived from England.
By following the recommendations for Anglican church design, this church with its careful detailing was the forerunner of a sophisticated architectural culture in the province.
