Testaments of Faith, Manitoba’s Pioneer Churches

Purpose

This touring exhibition was prepared to enable a wider audience to share my experiences in searching for, discovering, and documenting what is fast disappearing. Its intent is to create a greater awareness of Manitoba’s heritage, providing images where the reality is unavailable. It is a preview of my proposed book, Of Wood and Stone, Manitoba’s 19th Century Churches.

The exhibition consists of 48 photographs, packed in three custom-made crates, designed for  ease of handling by one person. Each crate has 16 ready-to-hang photographs framed under glass in metal frames, a list of contents, descriptive caption cards, and instructions for unpacking, repacking, handling and maintenance.

Touring

Testaments of Faith, Manitoba’s Pioneer Churches, premiered at the Adelaide McDermot Gallery in 2005 before moving to ten other galleries outside Winnipeg during the next four years. The last stop of the tour was in Winnipeg at the Pavilion Gallery Museum in Assiniboine Park, in 2009. The exhibition has since been at other locations in Winnipeg. See schedule. As it is an ongoing exhibition it is available for bookings.

Where official openings were arranged a slide show was usually part of the program. Also, visitors could express their views through face-to-face communication. Or else in entries in the visitors’ books.

Response

Together with oft-expressed appreciation of the exhibition a frequent inquiry was about a book on Manitoba churches, a souvenir other than the exhibition’s colour catalogue. The proposed book, Of Wood and Stone, Manitoba’s 19th Century Churches, will attend to that request.

In addition to those who came from different parts of Canada—from Newfoundland to British Columbia, inclusive–the exhibition had visitors from overseas. As indicated in their comments they hailed from Belgium, Brazil, Burma, Germany and Israel.

Gardewine provided complimentary inter-gallery shipping for Testaments of Faith, Manitoba’s Pioneer Churches throughout its four-year tour.

The exhibition is available for further bookings.
