Trembowla, Manitoba. St. Michael. Ukrainian Catholic. 1898

Provincial Heritage Site No. 108

This is the oldest Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada.

The pioneers who arrived in the Valley River area in 1896 named the settlement Terebovlia after their hometown. They persuaded Father Nestor Dmytriw, editor of the American newspaper Svoboda, to visit while on a Canadian tour. He came, and celebrated the First Ukrainian Divine Liturgy in a private home on April 12th 1897.

It was the first Ukrainian Catholic mass in Canada. The site is now marked by a granite cross, the Cross of Freedom, erected in 1966.

The following year, on the encouragement of Father Dmytriw, the congregation built a church in the Mink River area. Built of logs and covered with wooden siding, the church is architecturally modest and very small, measuring only four metres by five metres (12 x 15 feet). However, the interior is a remarkable example of icon painting and decoration of the Byzantine style.

Over the years the church has been threatened by road development and has been moved twice, finally to this safe haven.
